Summerhill 1-13
St Michael’s 0-5
The Summerhill Intermediate Ladies team have a home championship semi-final and a two-week break to look forward to after they defeated St Michael’s by 11 points on Wednesday evening.
Summerhill started like a house on fire and raced into a four-point lead. Ella Reilly opened the scoring from a free after Gracie Grehan was fouled. Summerhill had to be patient in the first few minutes and it payed off as Ciara Flaherty split the uprights. Aoife Carey and a second free from Reilly saw Summerhill lead 0-4 to no score after 14 minutes.
Marian Farrelly finally got St Michael’s off the mark, but Summerhill didn’t take their foot off the gas and kicked three more scores without reply. Gracie Grehan, a second point from Carey and Reilly’s third point put Summerhill into a superb position.
The half ended with Chloe Callaghan and Carey (her third) trading points with St Michael’s also being reduced to 14 players for 10 minutes when Marian Farrelly was shown a yellow card for a foul on Kate Flynn. Summerhill went into the dressing rooms leading eight points to two.
St Michael’s came out and scored the first two points of the second period courtesy of Chloe Callaghan with Jenny Rispin making a superb save to deny Callaghan a goal that would have given St Michael’s a route back into the contest.
Summerhill composed themselves and fired over the next three scores to go seven points up. Gracie Grehan, Reilly (free) and substitute Grace Ennis all raised white flags. In the middle of those scores, Summerhill had the crossbar come to their aid as Farrelly’s rasping effort rattled off the woodwork.
Farrelly pointed a free for the home side’s fifth point, but that’s as good as it got for them as Summerhill finished the game with a further 1-2. A point from Robyn Larkin and Carey’s fourth of the game were followed by a goal from Ennis as she smashed the ball into the top-corner off her weaker left foot.
